The title of the show captures Virgil's verse "lacrimae rerum" which translation is difficult and open to interpretation, but the artist here translates it literally. This gesture of embracing the poetics of a sort of "bad translation" or "forced translation" and the new forms originated by this, is present in the different processes making up the pieces in the show.
In this exhibition, Álvaro delves into new avenues of production, continuing his exploration on language, music, their possible origins, their material conditions and the relation with natural and bodily processes. On this occasion, he reflects about the transfer of emotionally charged fragments from one medium to another, the resulting events and forms, also, the role that movement, notation and writing –and their minimum units– can have in this process.
In his own words, the artist pursues "a movement, a groove, a pneuma, a squiggle, a blow, an impulse. Fleeting and volatile, like sand running through a hand, like the vibration of a whisper sneaking into the ear, like a subtle touch that tickles, like a tear pushed through the cheek by the blink of an eye."
Álvaro Chior has participated in the collective exhibition Desengaño, curated by LUM within the Young Curators Residency Program of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation in Madrid. His work has been shown in institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Sala de arte joven (Madrid), Sala Amadís Injuve (Madrid), Matadero (Madrid), CC Can Felipa (Barcelona) , Fabra i Coats (Barcelona), DA2 Domus Artium 2002 (Salamanca), Las Cigarreras (Alicante), TEA Tenerife Espacio de las artes (Tenerife), Etopia: Center of Art and Technology (Zaragoza), as well as in other countries such as USA, Mexico, Italy and Scotland.
